THE SOCIAL MIND

My research relies on cognitive principles and methods to analyze and investigate the social mind. Broadly, I am interested in the cognitive dynamics of person construal. More specifically, I am interested in questions such as when we construe individuals in terms of their social group memberships versus personal attributes, how our knowledge of or familiarity with the individuals in question changes these construals, and how higher-order causal beliefs (e.g., about the nature of personality, about society and social structure) impact the stereotypes we have and how we use them. More recently, I have also become interested in how apparently non-social processes (such as motor control) are subject to social influence.

  RESEARCH PROJECTS IN PROGRESS

Familiarity, goals, and the interaction context: Moderators of categorical thinking in person construal (with C. N. Macrae, University of Aberdeen; M. F. Mason, Columbia Business School; D. Fockenberg, University of Birmingham)

Stereotypes and theories of intergroup differences: Causal reasoning and stereotype representation (with G. V. Bodenhausen, Northwestern University; N. L. Dennis, MRes Student, University of Birmingham)

Combining social concepts: Stereotype combination and executive function (with D. J. Carroll, University of Sheffield; R. R. C. Hutter, University of Leeds; Anke Goerzig, University of Birmingham)

Encoding flexibility in stereotyping (with C. B. Häcker, PhD Student, & A. S. Meyer, University of Birmingham)

Stereotype threat: Necessary and sufficient conditions (with H. E. S. Rosenthal, University of Durham)

The ubiquity of the self: Implications for projection and perspective taking (with K. R. Peters, PhD Student, University of Western Ontario)

Visual attention in other-race face processing (with K. D. Cassidy, PhD Student, and G. W. Humphreys, University of Birmingham)

Social influences on motor control (with C. D. T. Gillett, PhD Student, & R. C. Miall, University of Birmingham)

Coordination of social perception and action (with P. Rotshtein, University of Birmingham)

Using fMR-adaptation to investigate other-race face processing (with S. Rappaport, PhD Student, University of Birmingham)
